Asian Cinema: Spirited Away

(Spirited Away, 2001)

I think everyone will unfamiliar with the film "Spirited Away". It is the most popular film which is directed by Hayao Miyazaki. My first time of watching this movie is about 12 years ago, like 7 or 8 years old. I have frighten by one scene of that movie, which is the protagonist's parents have turned into big fat pigs after eating the God's food. After so many years, now I realized what are the hidden meanings in this movie, which is very educating and have the value of thinking.

(The parent of Chihiro had turned into pigs after eating the God's food.)

The plot of the film is about the on the way of moving their house, the protagonist's family had accidentally went into the other world, which is the world for the God. Due to the protagonist's parent had turned into pigs after eating God's food, so the family was stuck in that world. After being help from Haku, Kamaji and Lin, she finally got a job from Yubaba, the ruler of that world. In order to get that job, her name was taken away by Yubaba, from Chihiro Ogino to Sen. She started to become more mature while working for Yubaba in the bathhouse. After all the things happened, Haku got back his real name, he was no longer controlled by Yubaba, and the protagonist finally got back to her own world, with her parent.

The bathhouse that is run by Yubaba was the most impressed building that I can remember in this film as most of the scenes are occurred in this building. The building gives out a sense of Japan ancient architects. In the bathhouse, there are baths for the God to relax, rooms for the God to eat and to chat, kitchen for the frog-like men to cook, places for 'yuna' (women who works in the bathhouse) to rest, boiler room for Kamaji to work, the office of Yubaba, and the bedroom for her child, Bo. The places in the bathhouse except for Yubaba's office and Bo's bedroom, it is more to the structure of the Japan ancient interior design. As for the Yubaba's office and Bo's bedroom, it is more to Europe ancient interior design.

(Although it is just a small part of the office, bu t we can see the design from the chair and the hearth.)

The costumes for the workers are also able to let audience find out this is a Japanese film as the costume that wear by the 'yuna' and the frog-like men are the outfits in the ancient Japan. The costume that wear by 'yuna', I think its named are 'Yukatabira' or 'hakama' and 'haori', outfits that had been used since a long time ago. In other hand, the costume that is wear by the frog-like man is the ancient Japan's worker's outfit, just like 'yuna'.

We can also realized this is a Japanese film by the God that have appeared in the film. For an example, there is a God with a radish outlook. When Chihiro was trying to got to the highest floor, the radish outlook God had helped her to cover her human identity from the bathhouse worker. That God also leaded Chihiro to the highest floor of the bathhouse too. That radish outlook God is named 'Oshira-sama', which is the God for the silkworm, horse and also the agriculture. For other God, there are most likely based on the the traditional Japan folklore, Namahage.
