Jean Pierre-Jeunet's AMELIE

(Amelie, 2001)

'Amelie', the film that we screened today was 'Amelie'. I found it is quite interesting because the film is a bit weird...... Ya... I think weird is the word that can represent the film.

The plot of the film is all about how Amelie helped others to find their happiness and finally gained her own happiness by beginning a relationship with Nino. The film is quite confusing at the front part because the opening there are some montage that does not related to the film. However, when Amelie accidentally dropped the perfume cover and discovered a metal box, she decided to return the metal box to its master, the film started to be more normal compare to the opening. Amelie also decided to do good secretly if the metal box's master is happy with the appearance of it.

Let's talk about the film techniques that is used in the film. There are a lot of close up shot in the film to show the expression of the actors. The reason why the film has so many close up shot, I think it is because the heroine likes to observe people and the plot require it. For examples, as Amelie needs to know how the metal box's master feel, so the shot is close up to show the expression of him. Beside that, the scene looks distorted when Mr Collignon was being fooled by Amelie's tricks is also an example of having a close up shot too. It is to show the feeling of confuse and afraid.
(Example 1)Dominique Bredoteau looks happy yet he is crying.

Other than that, there are some scenes when Amelie was going to look for 'Dominique Bretodeau', and the scenes when Nino was cycling a bike and Amelie was sitting behind Nino, the scenes are distorted and fast-forwarded. It could be meaning that the time is passing and the feeling of Amelie felt.

The mise-en-scene in the film also help me to understand the film more. First of all is the props. There are so many props to link Amelie to others. Below is the list of props that I had found out in the film:
- an album full of strangers' photos (relation between Amelie with Nino)
Amelie is showing the photo album to Dufayel.

- an hidden old metal box filled with old toys(the things that trigger Amelie to help people secretly)
Amelie found out it is a metal box that had hidden for a long time.

- an art drawn by Amelie's neighbor (relating herself in the art and tells the neighbor her thought)
Dufayel is asking Amelie what is her thought about one of the characters in his art.

- passport photo booths (places that Nino went and they meet)
Nino is collecting the photo while Amelie pass by.

- the garden gnome of her father (Amelie used it to persuade her father to go for traveling)
Amelie's father is placing the garden gnome.

- the video tapes (one-way communication from Amelie and the neighbor)
Dufayel is watching the video tape that recorded by Amelie.

- the stones that Amelie collected from everywhere (for the used of stone skipping, release stress)
Amelie is skipping the stone that she collected before.

Most of the lighting used for this film is soft light. I think they used soft light is because Amelie likes to imagine and soft light gives the effect of dreamy. Due to the lighting is used when Amelie starred at someone or she smile, so throughout the film, I constantly think that 'Argh... This film is so weird...'. Although it is weird, but I felt interesting when I watched it as Amelie has her own way to help others. However, some of them is annoying though.

(Spirited Away, 2001) I think everyone will unfamiliar with the film "Spirited Away". It is the most popular film which is directed by Hayao Miyazaki. My first time of watching this movie is about 12 years ago, like 7 or 8 years old. I have frighten by one scene of that movie, which is the protagonist's parents have turned into big fat pigs after eating the God's food. After so many years, now I realized what are the hidden meanings in this movie, which is very educating and have the value of thinking. (The parent of Chihiro had turned into pigs after eating the God's food.) Asian Cinema: Chung King Express

(Chungking Express, 1994) I am surprised that we were screening Chinese film, but at the same time I was like having a thought of will I understand what is the film telling. I had watched one movie before that is directed by Wong Kar Wai director, which I also cannot fully understand what is the director trying to convey the messages to us. There are two story included in one film and the main characters of the second story can be seen in the first story frequently. When the first story's protagonist came out from the snack bar he always go, he met the heroine of the second story, who is the cousin of the snack bar's owner.
