Run Lola Run by Tom Tykwer

(Run Lola Run, 1998)

Today, we have screened the film 'Run Lola Run' in our Film Studies class. We all kind of excited by the movie as we heard the background music of the film. The animation opening of the film also let me have the interest in watching it.

The plot of the film is about Lola, the heroine, kept on running for 100,000 marks to save her boyfriend, Manni's life. The film is presented like a video game, when you die or cannot make it, you can start your game over again from your save point. In this film, the total of Lola's run is three times. In each of her running have a different plot for it.

Let's talk about the editing techniques that has been used by the director, Tom Tykwer in this film. The director used a lot of jump cuts in this film to show the tension and the fast-paced feeling. The running scenes are using the jump cuts to gives the effect of jumping forward of time. In this film, a very interesting fact about it is when Lola bumped into someone, there will be a groups of photos showing that person's life after that incident. In addition, the photos of that person's life will be changing in each different run. For an instance, the old lady that Lola first bumped into.
(The first run) she later steals a baby after she lost the custody of her own.
(The second run)  She later wins the lottery and lives a luxurious life. 
(The third run) She later joins a church and devote herself to the God.

Split screen is used in the film when Lola missed the timing to show the actions taken by each actor when they were apart. For an example, when Lola was running as fast as possible to reach the place, Manni was waiting for her appearance to decide what is his next action.

When Lola was shot, flashback appeared. In the flashback, Lola was asking Manni some silly questions about their love. In that conversation, Lola has been asked back by Manni does she wanted to leave him. The scene back to Lola was dying and Lola's answer was not to leave him. The flashback scene also appeared when Manni was dying too and he refuse to die. I think the color of the scenes is red is because the two actors were in dangerous and red represent blood. Match cut is used in the ending by matching the bag of money and the phone in both scene to create the effect of seamless reality-effect. In video game, it's like you fail to win the game and you decide to play it over again.

The editing techniques have enhanced the movie to another level, it makes the movie more interesting and more logical to be watched. I really recommended to watch this movie as it has so many charming points in it. It is also my first time watching this kind of story that looks like a video game.

Asian Cinema: Spirited Away

(Spirited Away, 2001) I think everyone will unfamiliar with the film "Spirited Away". It is the most popular film which is directed by Hayao Miyazaki. My first time of watching this movie is about 12 years ago, like 7 or 8 years old. I have frighten by one scene of that movie, which is the protagonist's parents have turned into big fat pigs after eating the God's food. After so many years, now I realized what are the hidden meanings in this movie, which is very educating and have the value of thinking. (The parent of Chihiro had turned into pigs after eating the God's food.) The plot of the film is about the on the way of moving their house, the protagonist's family had accidentally went into the other world, which is the world for the God. Due to the protagonist's parent had turned into pigs after eating God's food, so the family was stuck in that world. Asian Cinema: Chung King Express

(Chungking Express, 1994) I am surprised that we were screening Chinese film, but at the same time I was like having a thought of will I understand what is the film telling. I had watched one movie before that is directed by Wong Kar Wai director, which I also cannot fully understand what is the director trying to convey the messages to us. There are two story included in one film and the main characters of the second story can be seen in the first story frequently. When the first story's protagonist came out from the snack bar he always go, he met the heroine of the second story, who is the cousin of the snack bar's owner.
